Smt. Uma Muralikrishna
is a dancer of unprecedented and graceful intensity, of both
the Bharathanatyam and Kuchupudi Schools of Classical Indian
dance.She began her training in Bharathanatyam as a child of
5 under Padmashri K.N.Dhandayudhapani Pillai and persued her
passion with Padmashri Adyar K.Lakshman. Subsequently she
devoted herself to Kuchupudi in which Padmanabhan Vempati
Chinna Satyam is her guru.
Major auditoriums and dance festivals in India and abroad
have reverberated with applause at her dance technique. The
titles bestowed upon Uma by cultural associations include-
Natyakala Ratna, Singaarmani, Yuva Kala Bharathi,
Nadanamamani and Kalaimamani.She was specially chosen to
revive and perform the complex and rare item in Kuchupudi
repertoire, "the Simhanandhini" (which is about 500 years
old, where the dancer draws a lion with her feet) for the
'Les Oriental Festival' in France in June 2005. She is the
Founder-Director of 'Subhasheela Academy of Fine Arts', a
cultural organization dedicated to promote classical Indian
dance and music
