uma

Smt. Uma Muralikrishna is a dancer of unprecedented and graceful intensity, of both the Bharathanatyam and Kuchupudi Schools of Classical Indian dance. She began her training in Bharathanatyam as a child of 5 under Padmashri K.N.Dhandayudhapani Pillai and persued her passion with Padmashri Adyar K.Lakshman. Subsequently she devoted herself to Kuchupudi in which Padmanabhan Vempati Chinna Satyam is her guru.

Major auditoriums and dance festivals in India and abroad have reverberated with applause at her dance technique. The titles bestowed upon Uma by cultural associations include- Natyakala Ratna, Singaarmani, Yuva Kala Bharathi, Nadanamamani and Kalaimamani. She was specially chosen to revive and perform the complex and rare item in Kuchupudi repertoire, "the Simhanandhini" (which is about 500 years old, where the dancer draws a lion with her feet) for the 'Les Oriental Festival' in France in June 2005. She is the Founder-Director of 'Subhasheela Academy of Fine Arts', a cultural organization dedicated to promote classical Indian dance and music
