S Shashank

Shashank, a 29 year-old flute virtuoso from
South India, has been captivating audiences and critics
around the world since the age of twelve. Shashank's
exceptional musical talent was first revealed at the age of
nine months. Though he studied violin until the age of six,
Shashank surprised his teacher one day by performing an
intermediate-level composition on his father's bamboo flute
- flawlessly!
The
self-taught Shashank made his debut at the prestigious
Madras Music Academy; he played with such mastery and
imagination that critics gave him a standing ovation! For
the past ten years, Shashank has had a huge following in
India, Europe and the Far East. In 1994, Shashank was
honored by then President of India, R. Venkatraman. He has
numerous awards to his credit, including the prestigious
title 'Kalaimamani' conferred by the Government of Tamil
Nadu. Shashank's performances feature an extraordinary range
of musical expression - from the deepest meditations to
youthful fun and astonishing virtuosity. Over the years
Shashank has evolved a concert pattern imbibing the best of
North Indian and South Indian classical styles and prefers
to call himself an Indian classical flautist.
